Today was a two page kind of day. I think I have it in me to do a third one but I have trouble recognizing when I’ve accomplished something, and should be rewarded, and I think taking the night off is justified. Part of the reason I was able to get these pages done was because I did not go running today. I have been thinking about stopping my exercising to focus more on drawing. You might not think that it would make a huge difference but it takes me about two and half hours to run my route. I feel like I’ve been doing comics for a long time now without ever really commenting to them. I’m still going over some stuff in my head, but I thought about making myself do at least one page a day. I just have a lot of stories to tell.
I did these pages in a slightly different way then I normally do. I penciled them both first then switched back and forth with the inking. That way there was no lag time between inking stages. It’s a better way of working. I might try and pencil two pages a day, then ink them the next day. Although I can pencil much faster than I can ink, so the inking days would seem much longer than penciling ones. I don’t know. I change my mind a lot.
I really like the way the pages are coming out for this issue. I’m still doing the detail work in the backgrounds, but I’m not using any lines on the foreground and characters. It looks really great. I also started using more blacks, but not in a really true way. I was looking at the way Kirby would use blacks and he doesn’t just throw shadow down for no reason or to feel up space, but he using it as a design element. I’d like to incorporate more of that into my own work.
